What Does a Wedding MC Actually Do? (And Do You Need One?)

If you’re planning your wedding, you’ve probably come across the idea of having an MC — but a lot of couples aren’t totally sure what they actually do, or whether they need one.

As a wedding celebrant and MC, this is something I get asked all the time.

What a Wedding MC Actually Does

A wedding MC is essentially there to guide the reception and keep everything running smoothly.

That includes:

  • Welcoming guests and setting the tone

  • Introducing key moments like entrances, speeches and formalities

  • Keeping the timeline on track

  • Making announcements throughout the night

  • Working in with your venue, planner and vendors

It’s not about being over the top or taking over the room — it’s about keeping things organised while still feeling natural and relaxed.

Do You Actually Need One?

Technically, no. You can ask a friend or family member to step in.

But this is where things can get a bit tricky. It’s a bigger role than people expect, and it usually means that person can’t fully switch off and enjoy the night. They’re thinking about timings, what’s coming next and making sure everything runs as planned.

That’s why a lot of couples choose to bring in a professional wedding MC instead.

The Advantage of Having Your Celebrant as Your MC

This is where it can make a lot of sense.

If your celebrant is also your MC, there’s already a level of familiarity there. We’ve spent time together in the lead-up to your wedding, I know your story, your personalities, and the kind of vibe you’re going for.

It means the energy from your ceremony carries naturally into the reception, rather than feeling like a handover to someone new.

There are also a few practical benefits:

  • It’s often more cost-effective than booking two separate vendors

  • You don’t have to ask a guest to take on the role

  • Everything feels more consistent across the day

  • I can work in closely with your vendors from start to finish

  • I bring my own AV equipment if needed, so you’re covered

Keeping Things Running Without Overdoing It

One of the main concerns couples have is that an MC will be too loud or over the top.

That’s not how I approach it. The goal is to keep things moving, make sure guests know what’s happening and step in where needed without it ever feeling forced or distracting.

Final Thoughts

Whether you choose a professional MC or ask someone you know, the key is to make sure someone is responsible for guiding the reception.

If you want things to feel smooth, relaxed and well-timed, having an experienced MC makes a big difference.

And if you’re already booking a celebrant, combining the two roles can make things a lot easier.

If you’re planning your wedding and want to chat about how it could work, feel free to get in touch. I may or may not shake it on the dance floor as well.
